This year’s COMPASS Awards was graced by Mr Baey Yam Keng, Senior
Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Transport & Ministry of
Culture, Community and Youth, as our Guest-of-Honour.
This year, the late Mr Chang Kwai Ming was honoured with the
Lifetime Achievement Award (Posthumous) for his contributions to the
local choral scene. Mr Chang was the Chairman of COMPASS from 1993 to
2017 and his last project to the community was to encourage a passion
for choral music in the young. This led to the formation of the Young
Singers Choir. A final ode to the late Mr Chang Kwai Ming was presented
with two performances by the Young Singers Choir; performing “Danny Boy”,
one of Mr Chang's favourite choral piece and a duet their vocal prowess
from the one-on-one tutelage (part of Mr Chang's project) with “Sous Le
Dome Epais”.
Young Artiste of the Year, M1LDL1FE got the audience
grooving to their electronic-pop tunes, Distraction and In Your Arms,
with the latter bagging the Top Local English Pop Song. Top Local Malay
Pop Song recipient, Alif Abdullah, had the audience enthralled with his
performance of “Buat Selamanya”. This is Alif’s third Top Local Malay
Pop Award, having bagged the same award in Years 2014 and 2016 for
“Untuk Dia” and “Tepi Sikit”.
Meritorious recipient Samuel Tan performed 记得吗 Ji De Ma,
theme song from The Songs We Sang 我们唱着的歌 – a Xinyao documentary directed
by Eva Tang. Serene Koong touched the hearts of the audience with the
melodic tunes of”幸福不难” (Xing Fu Bu Nan) & “当世界只剩下我一个人” (Dang Shi Jie Zhi Sheng Xia Wo Yi
Ge Ren), both theme songs for Mediacorp's blockbuster drama series, The
Dream Maker & The Dream Maker II.
Joanna Dong closed the evening with a spectacular performance
of”雪下得正好” (Xue
Xia De Zheng Hao) & a medley featuring Singapore female mandopop
singers: Tanya Chua’s “别找我麻烦” (Bie Zhao
Wo Ma Fan), Mavis Hee’s “阳光总在风雨后” (Yang
Guang Zong Zai Feng Yu Hou), Joi Chua’s “陪你看日出” (Pei Ni Kan Ri Chu) and Stefanie Sun’s “天黑黑” (Tian Hei Hei).
